The Malamma–Rigan Gabas Road corridor in Kano State

Kano State, Nigeria — International Consolidated Contractors Ltd. (ICCO) has been awarded a major contract by Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Works and Housing for the construction of the 101-kilometre Malamma–Rigan Gabas Road in Warafa Federal Constituency, Kano State.

The contract, valued at approximately ₦23.01 billion, inclusive of VAT, will be implemented over a period of 36 months. The project represents a significant investment in Kano State’s transport infrastructure and is expected to generate lasting economic and social benefits for communities throughout the project corridor.

The new road will strengthen connections between communities, commercial centres and essential public services. It will also provide a more reliable route for the movement of people, agricultural produce, commercial goods, construction materials and other essential supplies.

Supporting Trade and Agricultural Development

The Malamma–Rigan Gabas Road is expected to play an important role in supporting local trade and agricultural activity. Improved road conditions will help farmers and traders transport their products more efficiently and gain better access to local and regional markets.

The project is also expected to support small and medium-sized businesses by improving supply routes, expanding access to customers and encouraging commercial activity along the corridor.

Local Employment: During construction, the project is anticipated to create direct and indirect employment opportunities and generate demand for local materials, transportation, accommodation and other supporting services. Wherever practicable, ICCO will seek to engage local workers and suppliers.

Improving Access to Essential Services

In addition to its economic value, the project is expected to improve access to schools, healthcare facilities, government services and neighbouring communities.

More dependable transport links can make daily travel safer and more efficient for students, families, workers, healthcare providers and emergency-response services. The road will also facilitate the delivery of medical supplies, educational materials and essential goods to communities located along and near the project route.

Regional Integration: By improving links between rural communities and urban centres, the project will contribute to greater social inclusion and regional integration across Kano State.

Comprehensive Engineering Scope

The project will involve major earthworks, pavement construction, drainage infrastructure, erosion protection, bridge works and road-safety installations.

The planned activities include:

  • Clearing, excavation and backfilling
  • Construction of subbase, road base and crushed-stone base
  • Bituminous prime coating and double-surface treatment
  • Concrete pipe culverts and open drainage channels
  • Reinforced-concrete drain covers
  • Stone masonry and erosion-protection works
  • Bridge structures and associated reinforced-concrete works
  • Guardrails, road signs, kilometre markers, markings and studs
  • Concrete-tile footways
  • Environmental works including grassing and tree planting

The drainage and erosion-protection components will be particularly important in enhancing the resilience and long-term performance of the road.
